3D laser scanning has already become a standard for larger projects, but few people know that it is also used for smaller or more unusual ones. One of our clients faced the task of redesigning one of the pipelines in a building. They reached out to us to scan the installation to create a bill of quantities for the pipes and fittings needed for replacement.
We had just one day for the scanning, so there was no room for errors. An experienced building employee guided us through the site, showing us all the exposed parts of the installation as well as the planned pipeline route in inaccessible areas. After scanning the entire route during our on-site visit, we had a refined set of data, which became the foundation for further work.
After cleaning the point cloud and trimming it to the areas where the installation was visible, we compared the collected data with the archived PDF sketches in Revit. Although the task only involved preparing a bill of quantities in tabular form, the client received the point cloud and a PDF with a three-dimensional schematic of the installation, where each pipeline section was labeled with its diameter and length, along with the required list.
The main benefit for the client was receiving a reliable inventory of fittings and pipes needed for replacement. The point cloud they received can be used for further renovation work if necessary.
If you have any questions about scanning, let us know!
Have a great day at work 🙂
